MP from Arunachal urges Sonia to intervene, as lawmakers feel threatened

New Delhi, Thu, 29 Sep 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Sep 29 (ANI): Arunachal Pradesh Member of Parliament Takam Sanjoy today urgently sought Congress president Sonia Gandhi's intervention, as there is complete lawlessness in the state after a rebellion by a section of Congress MLAs against Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin showing no signs of dissipating.

Arunachal Pradesh is plunged into a political crisis with Chief Minister Gamlin's fate hanging in the balance as many ruling Congress legislators seek a change in leadership due to his dictatorial attitude.

A large section of Congress MLAs are in Delhi led by state congress APCC chief and PWD minister Nabam Tuki, demanding the removal of Gamlin.

The crisis further worsened with the kidnapping of an MLA near Arunachal CM's official bungalow on September 25th followed by kidnapping of PHED and Social Welfare Minister Chowna Mein, who has accused Gamlin for his abduction on September 26th evening.

Commenting on the complete breakdown of the law and order in the state, Sanjoy said: "People hoped that new Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin would follow in the footsteps of former CM Dorjee Khandu, but to the utter dismay it was otherwise. It resulted in alienation of people and leaders from the new CM."

He further said that for first time in the history of Arunachal took such a bad turn and there were attempts to make divisions within the tribes, which puts a question mark on the leadership of Gamlin.

Condemning the abduction of MLAs by armed goons, Sanjoy said: "In broad daylight on Sepember 25th Parliamentary Secretary was taken away. Legislators fear for life as a senior Cabinet Minister was abducted at gunpoint on September 26th and taken to CM Gamlin's bungalow. It has bypassed all records of criminalisation of politics."

After hearing of minister's abduction, the Member of Parliament asked the local police to act against the culprits but there was no help forthcoming from the administration.

"This shows the true picture of law and order scenario in the state. Still more than 100 armed youths are reportedly inside CM's official bungalow. I demand Government of India to look into the situation and to put culprits behind bars or, else our lives will be in danger," Sanjoy said

Bamang Tago, a leading human rights activist and chairman of NGO Arunachal Citizens Right, said that intervention from All India Congress Committee is need of the hour.

"Governance has come to a standstill because of this political turmoil with common people suffering the most. Communalisation has increased in the society under the state government. The strategic state of Arunachal should be given due importance by Centre so that suffering of people can end soon," he added. (ANI)
