London, Sept 27 (ANI): A new British-built car, which runs entirely on coffee beans, has broken the world speed record for a car powered by organic waste.
A modified Rover SD1 broke the previous record of 47mph achieved by a US team's car fuelled by wood pellets, as it reached 66.5mph at the Elvington Race Track near York, reports the Daily Mail.
Engineer Martin Bacon, with the Teesdale Conservation Volunteers of Durham, modified the old car by fitting it with a 'gasifier' and filters, which could turn waste coffee granules into energy to drive the engine.
It entered the Guinness Book of Records after it was driven from London to Manchester in March last year, a distance that was never travelled earlier by a car powered by waste material.
The car, which had its design based on a coffee-powered Volkswagen Sirocco built for BBC's science show 'Bang Goes The Theory', will be on display in Manchester on October 22 and 23. (ANI)
