West Midnapore, Sep 26 (ANI): In an endeavor to create employment for locals in Maoist-affected West Midnapore, forest officials here started a community hall construction project.
Forest Range Officer, West Midnapore said that a community hall construction project has started, which has employed locals.
"The project of construction of community hall along with toilets for both men and women costs rupees 8,560. Local contractors have employed villagers as carpenters, painters, electricians and construction labourers etc and involved them construction work. In this way, we are able to provide them employment in my area," said Avijit Kar, Forest Range Officer.
However, villagers in the region, who are reeling under abject poverty following violence unleashed by the Maoists, said that the work opportunities developed by the forest department is benefiting them.
"We trust forest department officials and now we are getting jobs to take care of trees in forest area. This is absolute development. We will take care of forest animals and stop illegal cutting down of trees," said Bibhuti Mana.
The locals are employed as masons, carpenters, painters and forest guards etc.
According to the local media reports, tribals in the region have started agitating against the rebels and reposing trust in the government.
Analysts say that Maoists oppose the development activity like the construction of roads, provision of schools and drinking water facilities in the area.
Therefore, with an aim to boost development in tribal-dominated regions, mostly affected by Maoist violence, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had approved the Integrated Action Plan (IAP) for 60 selected tribal and backward districts.
The IAP is aimed at solving problems related to healthcare, drinking water, education and infrastructure.
The tussle for power between the Maoists and the government in the interior has led to a virtual breakdown of state-machinery in the Maoist affected regions. (ANI)
