New Delhi, Sep 21 (ANI): Ahead of the parliamentary by-elections in Haryana's Hisar District, Right to Information activist and close associate of veteran social activist Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, has launched a new awareness campaign to promote the Lokpal Bill.
Addressing a news conference here on Tuesday, Kejriwal said: "The candidates from different parties, be it Congress or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) competing in the Hissar elections should submit a written letter signed by their party presidents in support of Jan Lokpal Bill as drafted by the members of the civil society."
He wanted the local residents to vote only for the candidates who give them the written assurance to support the Bill.
"After talks among all the activists and a public meeting (at Hissar), everyone decided that all the candidates get it in a written message for the people of Hissar from their party president. Congress party candidates should get it signed from Sonia Gandhi, BJP candidates should get it signed from Nitin Gadkari and all the parties that are there should get it signed from their party presidents that they fully support Anna ji's Jan Lokpal Bill and when this Bill is introduced in Parliament then they will issue a whip to their lawmakers to support and vote in its favour," he added.
The by-elections are going to be held at Hissar on October 13 after the constituency fell vacant due to the demise of the former lawmaker and member of Haryana Janhit Congress party Bhajan Lal in June.
He also mentioned that an active campaign would be launched against all those who do not give a written assurance.
"September 30 is the last date for the candidates to take back their nominations and the forms have to be filled by September 26. All those who do not get it signed till September 30, the people of Hissar and the activists from India Against Corruption (IAC) will launch an active campaign and we will ask the people not to vote for them," added Kejriwal.
He stated that this method of taking a written assurance from the prospective lawmakers in favour of the ombudsman Bill would help in generating an honest political will.
He also announced that they would follow the same method in the elections slated to be held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand in the coming eight to 10 months.
Reacting to the proposed anti-corruption rally to be taken out by senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, Kejriwal said that they should appoint a Lokayukta in the sates run by them like Gujarat instead of carrying out such rallies.
"All those parties who are taking out (anti-corruption) rallies, to that I would only like to say that we do not need the rallies. We need enactment of Lokpal Bill. If they pass the Lokpal Bill in their respective states wherever they are in power then that would be sufficient," he said. (ANI)
