Karnataka CM Gowda expresses disappointment over state ombudsman's resignation

Bangalore, Tue, 20 Sep 2011 ANI

Bangalore, Sept 20 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday expressed his disappointment over the resignation of state ombudsman Justice Shivraj Patil.

After initially refusing to comment on the issue, Gowda said that Patil was a respected bureaucrat but it was unfortunate that fingers had been raised against his integrity, referring to the criticism that he had received on account of allegedly violating rules of allotment in cases of atleast three housing plots.

"I am not going to comment anything about the resignation of the Lokayukta. Shivraj Patil has worked in various places and his so-called dignity and decorum is so high, nobody can suspect it. But unfortunately today, there are a few people who have no other work, rather than criticising each and everybody. Really this sort of criticism certainly demoralises the person fighting against corruption," said Gowda.

Justice Patil resigned from his post on Monday following the controversy over allotment of housing sites for him and his wife.

"I did not ask for the position of Karnataka Lokayukta. When offered, I accepted this as an opportunity to serve the people of Karnataka with commitment and concern. A malicious campaign has been carried out over the past few days against me. I wish to clarify for people to know and judge for themselves on the holding of land and sites by my wife and myself," Justice Patil told reporters.

"This malicious campaign has deeply hurt and pained me. In this uncongenial atmosphere, I have deemed it appropriate to submit my resignation," he added.

According to reports, Justice Patil got into a sticky situation when documents surfaced showing him to be in possession of two sites of 9,600 square feet and 4,012 square feet from two housing cooperative societies, a clear violation of law. (ANI)
