New Delhi, Sep 19 (ANI): A large number of Kannada writers, artists, professors and academicians here today paid tributes to a distinguished German missionary who worked for the progress of Kannada language and literature, Dr. Herman Mogling on his 200th birthday.
Inaugurating the celebration organised by 'Dehali Kannadiga", a Kannada monthly published from Delhi, its editor M.B Samaga said, Mogling a German missionary from Basel Mission came to Karnataka (1836-1860) alongwith religious work, he worked for the progress of Kannada language, grammar and literature.
He composed 20 modern Kannada poems, collected and published 3000 Kannada classics in his "Bibliothica Carnatica", published first ever Kannada newspaper "Mangaluru Samachara" in 1843 and tanslated lot of Kannada literature to German language.
Samaga announced an award to be established by "Dehali Kannadiga" in memory of Mogling which would be given to a foreigner who worked for the progress of Kannada. (ANI)
