Rise of cocaine and hip-hop in 80's linked in new VH1 documentary

New York, Sept 18 (ANI): A new VH1 documentary has suggested that the simultaneous rise of cocaine and hip-hop in the urban street culture of the 1980s was directly linked.

 

'Planet Rock' suggested that the two fed off each other, particularly hip-hop off the crack culture, reports the New York Daily News.

 

Producers of the show talked to major rap stars like Snoop Dogg, B-Real of Cypress Hill and RZA and Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan, and found that all of them admitting taking illegal substances, with the majority naming marijuana.

 

The use of the term 'crack' has been recurrent in the rap game, from artist names like Kurtis Blow and T La Rock to lyrics about crack use and dealing.

 

The show touched on the ruined lives while focusing more strongly on ruined communities in which children were dealing crack before they were teenagers and many were convinced it was their only realistic shot at getting out. (ANI)
