Kolkata, Sep 18(ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who will contest the by-polls in the state, began her election campaign in Kolkata on Saturday.
The by-polls are scheduled to be held on September 25.
Banerjee will be contesting from the Bhawanipore assembly constituency to become a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
She will have to not just contest, but win the elections as well in order to continue as the Chief Minister.
"Well, Mamata Banerjee will contest in the Bhawanipore constituency in the by-elections. It is mandatory for any individual that he or she can take the oath, but within six months, she or he will have to contest in the elections will win to continue in the same post," said Sovandeb Chatterjee, Chief Whip of West Bengal Assembly.
"Mamata Banerjee was elected in the Parliament, but she didn't contest in the Assembly," he added.
Meanwhile, Banerjee interacted with her supporters at a procession along with other leaders, including Union Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi and hundreds of party workers.
The Bhawanipore seat was vacant since state's Transport Minister Subrata Bakshi resigned to make room for her to contest the elections.
Locals expressed their confidence in Banerjee and said that they want her to win.
"Mamata Banerjee is contesting the by-polls from the Bhawanipore constituency. We want her to win by a majority, we are very happy with her work," said Baby Chowdhury, a local.
Banerjee, who became the chief minister in May, is not yet a member of the West Bengal legislative assembly, as she did not contest the last assembly polls.
As per the set procedure, any person who becomes a minister or Chief Minister has to become a member of the state legislative assembly within six months of taking over the office. (ANI)
