Amritsar/Patna/Thiruvananthapuram,Sep.17 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party activists staged several protests in various cities across the country against the petrol price hiked and demanded an immediate roll back.
In Amritsar, BJP activists raised slogans against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and condemned the Congress led Untied Progressive Alliance (UPA) for its apathy towards the common man.
"All sections of the Indian society are bearing the brunt of misrule by the central government and we condemn the sudden hike in petrol prices," said Rahul Maheshwari, a BJP activist.
In Patna, activists took to the streets, saying that if there was no roll back of prices, they would organize a mass movement across Bihar.
In Thiruvananthapuram, residents scuffled with the police, forcing the authorities to arrest some of the protesters.
From Friday, state-run oil firms have raised petrol prices by nearly five percent, a move that eases their subsidy burden, but adds pressure to stubbornly high inflation in Asia's third-largest economy.
India has been increasing fuel prices in order to ease its fiscal burden but it puts pressure on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's ruling Congress party as its voter base is mainly rural.
Singh's government has been put on the back foot, owing to persistent inflation as well as a slew of corruption scandals that have weakened its ability to push through reforms. (ANI)
