Mumbai, Sep.15 (ANI): The Maharashtra Government has announced a cash award of Rs.1 lakh and a home for hockey star Yuvraj Walmiki.
Walmiki was a part of the team that beat Pakistan 4-2 in the final of the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy that was held in the Chinese city of Ordos on September 11.
Walmiki thanked the state government for the award and expressed his joy over the rousing reception given to players on their return to the country.
He said everybody knows hockey is less lucrative than cricket in the country however; the players play it for the love of the game and to represent India at the international stage.
He added that the players' refusal to accept a cash award of 25,000 rupees from Hockey India, the sport's administrative body, was not a big blow to the players financially.
"See, no hockey player demanded money after our victory. The 25,000 rupees given by Hockey India, I can't say if it was right or not, but I don't think that refusing that amount has caused me a great loss, because as far as I can speak about hockey players, and I say this with great conviction, no one plays hockey for money," said Walmiki.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said that in addition to the cash award and a home, the government would also consider providing Walmiki a job. (ANI)
