New York, Sept 11 (ANI): Cyndi Lauper is being widely criticised for messing up the US National Anthem during the US Open.
The 58-year-old singer sang her own version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the women's semi-final match between Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki.
Although the 'She's So Unusual' hitmaker got off to a good start, she messed up the anthem on reaching the line beginning with, "O'er the ramparts we watched".
Instead of singing, "were so gallantly streaming", Lauper blurted out "as our flag was still streaming".
"Holy Smokes ...'The flag was still streaming' - Cyndi Lauper just totally DESTROYED the Star Spangled Banner at the #usopen #fail," the New York Daily News quoted a mocking Twitter post as saying.
Christina Aguilera also distorted the lyrics of the US National Anthem at the Super Bowl XLV earlier this year, making a reference to "the twilight's last reaming", a bigger mistake as compared to Lauper's trivial one. (ANI)
