Melbourne, Sep 10(ANI): The lack of indigenous players at the top levels of Australian cricket has been described by businessman Eddie McGuire as a 'gaping omission' in the sport.
McGuire is the founding chairman of the Melbourne Stars, a franchise in Australia's newly-announced Twenty20 competition, the Big Bash League.
The 46-year-old also believes that the revamped Twenty20 competition could broaden cricket's cultural base.
"There is still a gaping omission in the world of cricket and that's indigenous players," the Age quoted McGuire, as saying.
"In football, I think we are up to 11, nearly 12 percent of the football population is indigenous. Cricket must start doing what football does, getting kids from every walk of life" he added.
Jason Gillespie is the only Test player to have publicly acknowledged his Aboriginal heritage, and all-rounder Dan Christian, a descendent of the Wiradjuri tribe in New South Wales, has represented Australia in Twenty20. (ANI)
