Vellore (Tamil Nadu), Sep.10 (ANI): Nalini Sriharan, who spent 20 years in prison for her role in the May 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, met her husband Murugan at the Vellore jail today.
Nalini was shifted from Chennai to Vellore a few days ago.
Saturday's meeting was Nalini's first with Murugan after President rejected his mercy plea last month. She had not met her husband over the last year.
Murugan and Nalini were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court, along with two other people, in 1999. Nalini's sentence was commuted to a life sentence after Congress president Sonia Gandhi's intervention. The intervention came after Nalini delivered a baby girl in jail.
Murugan and the other two convicts - Santhan and Perarivalan - were scheduled to be hanged on September 9. But last week, the Madras High Court suspended their execution by a further eight weeks.
Their mercy petitions, filed 11 years ago asking for their sentence to be commuted to life in prison, were rejected by President Pratibha Patil last month. (ANI)
