Rajpura (Punjab), Sep.6 (ANI): A MIG-21 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed here on Tuesday, but the pilot managed to eject himself safely without any injuries.
No civilian casualties were reported.
According to police officials, the crash took place around 11 a.m. near Rajpura in Patiala District.
"Around 11 am, we received a message that a MIG-21 has crashed near Shambhu toll plaza. We reached the spot as soon as possible and saw that it has crashed in the field. When we asked the locals, they told us that the aircraft was seen wobbling from a distance of 2 to 3 kilometres," said Manmohan Sharma, Superintendent of Police, Rajpura.
The pilot ejected himself out of the aircraft and landed in the open fields near the crash site.
Police officials were immediately informed by locals who witnessed the aircraft plummeting into the field.
As soon as the aircraft crashed, it burst into flames and fire fighters were seen dousing it.
The fighter aircraft took off from Ambala district of northern Haryana state and was on a routine training session.
Sharma added that officials of the Air Force Police were presently investigating the cause of crash.
Several cases of such fighter planes crashing due to technical snags and outdated parts have raised concerns about the safety of pilots handling it. (ANI)
