London, Sept 6(ANI): Football pundit Gary Neville needs a bodyguard when covering games, as he is so hated by fans because of his inflammatory opinions.
Neville's bosses at Sky Sports fear he will be attacked, and a minder accompanied the ex-England defender to Bulgaria for the Three Lions' Euro 2012 qualifying match, the Daily Star reported.
The former Manchester United captain, 36, was already public enemy No. 1 with Scousers. He famously said: "I can't stand Liverpool people."
But since he has started voicing his inflammatory opinions on Sky, he has infuriated fans around the country.
Before England's 3-0 win in Sofia on Friday, a furious fan tried to get on to the media bus because he wanted to "smack" Neville, the report said.
Last week, he had accused Liverpool of letting Chelsea clinch the Premier League title at Anfield in 2010, rather than allow United a chance to take it.
"At United, we knew that Liverpool would ease off if that meant depriving us of the championship, especially a 19th championship that would take us past their record," he had said.
"We'd heard rumours some Liverpool players had turned to one of their young lads and said: 'There's not a f***ing chance we're going to let United win this league'," he had added.
About the hiring of a bodyguard, one Liverpool fan said: "It's not surprising he [Neville] is worried about bumping into fans." (ANI)
