Oz lawn bowls official might pip Kiwi biggies for NZ cricket selection manager post

Wellington, Tue, 06 Sep 2011 ANI

Wellington, Sept 6(ANI): Kim Littlejohn, high performance manager for Bowls Australia for the past seven years, is reportedly the hot favourite to be unveiled by New Zealand Cricket for the national selection manager's role (NSM) this week.

That will leave recent selectors Mark Greatbatch, the interim NSM, and Glenn Turner out in the cold, along with former New Zealand captain Ken Rutherford, who was also on the shortlist, Stuff.co.nz reports.

The interview panel consisted of NZC's Director of Cricket John Buchanan, board member Brent King and former test fast bowler Shane Bond, the report said, adding that Littlejohn was flown to Christchurch for a second interview.

Littlejohn may not necessarily have witnessed a New Zealand first-class match, but he has cricketing experience in the Western Australian club competition, played professionally in England, and was an elite coach with Melbourne University, the report said.

The NSM job description said that the role would create "a unique system to identify, select, engage and measure top quality players".

The impending appointment continues an Australian influx at Christchurch headquarters, the report said.

With former Australian coach Buchanan overseeing the restructure, coach John Wright will be assisted by Aussies Trent Woodhill and Damien Wright.

Buchanan's former coaching assistant Jamie Siddons has taken over as Wellington coach, while Siddons is likely to be in the mix as Wright's eventual successor, the report said.

Under Buchanan's new structure, the NSM will manage selection for the national men's, women's and age-grade teams. Wright can veto any contentious decisions, as it was Buchanan's wish to give the coach more power. They will be assisted by selection advisers, who will be the six first-class coaches. (ANI)
