Demand for lotus fruit rises in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 4(ANI): Growers and sellers of lotus fruits or nelumbo nucifera in Jammu and Kashmir have said that they are pleased with the profits they earned due to the rise in demand of the fruit among locals.

 

The fruits are usually grown in the famous Dal Lake.

 

Growers and sellers said that since the last few days there was a surge in the demand for the fruits.We sell about 100 bundles lotus fruits in a day and we get good money from it," said Mohammad Yusuf, a seller.

 

The fruit is locally known as 'pumbach' and is also found in Manasbal lake in the Jhelum Valley.

 

Large number growers said that the fruit was in demand due to its medicinal values.

 

"A lot of people who are into this business get their day to day income by selling lotus fruits. People here like the fruit a lot especially Kashmiris. Even I love the fruit. I have come a long distance to buy these fruits for my family and children. My children love eating it," said Irshad Ahmad, a customer. (ANI)
