New Delhi, Aug 29 (ANI): Opposition parties on Monday appeared to be on the same wavelength as veteran social activist Anna Hazare on the issue of the 'Right to Recall' a Member of Parliament if he or she was not meeting the expectations of the people, who had elected them.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh said his party would always support it if it brings about systematic change.
"So far, if it is a matter of bringing a change in the system, the BJP always supports it. We have always demanded that there should be a check on corruption, and there should be change in the electoral system, administrative system, and side by side, there should be a discussion on country's economic system," Singh told mediapersons outside the Parliament here.
"When Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan had called for a total revolution, he had also raised the issue of the Right to Recall' at that time. So, I think, all the parliamentarians should sit down and consult the issue. No one should take it in a light manner," he added.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury said his party has also favoured the 'Right to Recall' for the last 40 years.
"Right to Recall is something that the CPI (M) has been demanding for nearly 40 years now. And that demand has also to be seen concurrently with the system of proportional representation. That is what has been our demand," said Yechury.
"The very fact that in India you never had a majority government, the fact that the government has more than 50 percent of vote support in the Centre. So, these are serious issues that are required to make our democracy more perfect," he added.
When asked that Hazare has said that his victory is not complete, Yechury said: "It is not about victory or loss. Discussions on Lokpal have been going on for the last 40 years. And, there are a lot of issues on which there has been no consensus as yet."
Hazare, who broke his over 288-hour long fast for a strong and effective Lokpal Bill on Sunday, said his fight would now be for 'Right to Recall' and 'Right to Reject' as part of electoral reforms so that corruption can be reduced.
"While Right to recall would be for those elected, the Right to reject will be a column in the ballot paper which would ensure the voter has a right to say that he does not like the listed candidates. We have to reform electoral system. You should be able to reject your candidate in the ballot paper. We have to do that," said Hazare.
"If the majority in a constituency says that they reject a candidate, even then the election should be cancelled. How much money they (candidates) will distribute? Once the candidate spends Rs 10 crore for one election and if the election is cancelled, then right sense will dawn upon them," he added.
Hazare further said this movement has created a faith that the country can be rid of corruption.
"This movement has created a faith that the country can be rid of corruption and we can go ahead with implementing laws and the Constitution made by Dr BR Ambedkar," he said.
The latest developments came after both the Houses of Parliament on Saturday agreed in principle with Hazare's three key demands.
Both Houses of Parliament adopted a resolution on the sense of house accepting key demands of Hazare on citizen charter, lower bureaucracy to be under the ambit of Lokpal and establishment of state lokayuktas and power of lokpal to penalise grievance redressal mechanism violators. (ANI)
