Kochi, Aug 29 (ANI): At least seven passengers were injured when a Gulf Air plane from Bahrain with 137 passengers on board, deviated from the runway just before landing at the Kochi international airport early this morning.
The incident occurred at 3.55 a.m. when the Bahrain-Kochi flight shot 5-10 metres off the runway.
According to sources, one of the wings of the plane also broke off.
The skidding of the plane triggered panic among the passengers, causing many of them to jump from the plane using airbags.
"All passengers jumped down from the plane using airbags through the back and side doors of the plane even before the ladder was brought to the flight, as the plane skidded off the runaway and nose dived into a marshy land," Mani Swamy, a passenger
"Even before the landing, the plane experienced a lot of jerking. It then landed and suddenly stopped within two seconds. All passengers jumped though the emergency door. Some jumped into the paddy fields while those who jumped into the runway suffered fractures. The reason behind incident is unknown. It may have happened due to the drizzle at the time of landing," Rishab Aiyer, another passenger
Meanwhile, the runway has been closed for bigger aircraft following the incident.
A probe has been ordered into the case by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). (ANI)
