Sydney, Aug 28 (ANI): A new research has revealed that though auto-erotic asphyxiation officially kills about six Australians every year, the figure could be much higher.
Research from the University of Adelaide shows that over a seven-year period, 44 people died due to thrill-seeking solo sex games, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
The study reveals that most of them suffocated after deliberately trying not to take in oxygen just to increase their sexual pleasure, while two accidentally electrocuted themselves.
A forensic pathologist, Professor Roger Byard, gathered the figures from the national coronial database for all cases between 2001 and 2007 where sexual asphyxia was held as the main reason behind deaths.
Professor Byard described auto-erotic death as an "unintentional lethal event occurring during solitary sexual activity".
Byard found that men accounted for 42 of the deaths with most of the victims were aged between 30 and 39.
However, some experts believe the actual number of auto-erotic deaths could be much higher because most of the deaths are attributed to suicide.
The research paper was published in the latest Journal of Forensic Science. (ANI)
