Beijing, Aug 28 (ANI): Chinese tennis star Li Na, who has become the second highest earner in the women's game, has said that she still cannot believe that she has attained that status.
Na attained that level after winning the French Open in June.
"My agent sent me an email saying I have this amount of sponsorship and I was like 'What? I have this much money? Wow, I am rich!'" Sky News quoted her, as saying. a became the second highest earner behind former world no 1 Maria Sharapova.
The win at Rolland Garros was the first time an Asian player has won a grand slam, making Li a global name and a superstar in her home country.
The tennis star is so well known in China that she has reportedly taken to disguises.
"I don't know winning any more grand slams will make the numbers huger. What that win meant was so big for the region. I think more wins always helps, but I don't think it is going to take her numbers and her fees double and triple. It is what it is with the French win," she added.
Women's Tennis Association (WTA) chairman Stacey Allaster had earlier claimed that Na's historic French Open win has given a boost to women's tennis in China.
She became the first player from China to win a Grand Slam singles title when she beat Francesca Schiavone in the French Open earlier this month. (ANI)
