London, August 27 (ANI): Researchers have finally backed the claims once made by American actress Jane Fonda - she attributed her youthful appearance to a continued healthy libido.

The double Oscar-winning actress, 73, devoted a chapter of her autobiography, 'Prime Time', to explain how the passage of time need not dampen a couple's ardour.

The chapter is entitled 'The Changing Landscape of Sex when You're Over the Hill', and offers "some suggested readings, videos and sex shops".

Now a study by the University of California San Diego looking at women between the ages of 60 and 89 found those who enjoyed an active sex life had a better quality of life and were happier.

Although it found that sexual activity was significantly lower in the older age groups - the majority reported being moderately or very satisfied with their sex lives.

This had an effect on their perceived quality of life, said Professor Wesley Thompson, of University of California San Diego.

"Contrary to our earlier hypothesis, sexual satisfaction was not significantly associated with age," the Telegraph quoted Thompson, as saying.

"Although the levels of sexual activity and functioning did vary significantly, depending on the woman's age, their perceived quality of life, successful aging and sexual satisfaction remained positive.

"What this study tells us is that many older adults retain their ability to enjoy sex well into old age.

"This is especially true of older adults who maintain a higher level of physical and mental health as they grow older.

"Furthermore, feeling satisfied with your sex life - whatever your levels of sexual activity - is closely related to your perceived quality of life," Thompson added. (ANI)
