New Delhi Aug 25 (ANI): Urging social activist Anna Hazare to give up his fast, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on Thursday appealed to lawmakers to collectively work to find credible approaches and solution to problem of corruption.
Addressing the Lok Sabha on corruption, Dr. Singh said: "Standing committee will consider all options including Jan Lokpal Bill. I respect Anna Hazare's idealism. I applaud and salute him. His life is much too precious, I urge him to end his fast."
Emphasising that corruption is a major national issue, Dr. Singh said: "I would like to assure the House we will do everything in our power to cleanse the system."
He said that there is less scope for corruption now as far as taxation is concerned.
Slamming the Opposition, Dr. Singh said: "BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi turned his speech into a personal attack on me as if I am the fountainhead of corruption."
"I am hurt but will not turn this into forum for accusations. In my seven years as PM, even when opposition members have accused me of many crimes, I have never used harsh language," he added
"I would like to assert I have a public life in the service of this country. In 20 years in Parliament, I tried to serve this country to the best of my ability. As Finance Minister, I helped deliver one of the fastest-growing economies in the world," he added. (ANI)
