London, August 24 (ANI): Nick Heidfeld is on the verge of being axed from Renault, who are planning to bring in Bruno Senna as the team's new driver.
According to reports, a deal is in place for Senna to take the German's seat in Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix and for the rest of the season.
But, Heidfeld might dig his heels and refuse to go, as the axe could signal the end of his career in the top flight, The Sun reports.
Heidfeld scored a podium finish in only his second race with the team in Malaysia, but since then he has failed to show many advances in the season.
Heidfield lies eighth in the drivers' championship on 34 points, one place and two points ahead of teammate Vitaly Petrov.
Speaking about Heidfeld's form earlier this year, Renault boss Eric Boullier said 'Let's say good, but not good enough'.
"Sunday is okay. Sunday's pace is good, it is very good, but obviously the higher we qualify on the grid, the better the chance we have to score more points," Boullier was quoted, as saying.
Test driver Senna, nephew of late legend Ayrton, was given a run-out by the team during Friday practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix meeting, but it seems likely he will now be promoted. (ANI)
