Government's draft of Lokpal Bill ineffective, says Javadekar

New Delhi , Tue, 23 Aug 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Aug 23 (ANI): Demanding government clarification on the prevailing situation in the country, Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday said the draft of Lokpal Bill presented by the government in the Parliament is ineffective and toothless.

Addressing mediapersons here, Javadekar said: "We have demanded today immediate dismissal and government's statement on the issue of the present situation, in which the country is agitating against the broad issue of corruption."

"And so Parliament must take cognizance of this and must discuss threadbare the corruption issue and at the same time how to tackle it with, including Lokpal? What the government has proposed, government's Lokpal is ineffective, toothless and so we don't approve of government Lokpal," he added.

Stating that the government has maintained silence on the issue, Javadekar said: "We don't want disruption, we want things to happen but government is keeping mum and saying nothing on the record."

Meanwhile, Om Prakash Yadav, lawmaker from Bihar's Siwan District sat in front of the Parliament to show solidarity with Hazare.

Yadav said that the citizens were facing the brunt of rampant corruption that was prevalent in the country and demanded a stringent law to curb it.

"The citizens are disappointed and suffering with corruption. A strong Lokpal Bill should be passed and we support the campaign started by Anna ji and his team. Whether it is Prime Minister, members of Parliament, ministers or legislators, all the public representatives should come under the purview of the Lokpal Bill," he said

"It is not right, if the government says that the Prime Minister should not come under the purview of the bill. In a country, there should be such a law in which if a person is corrupt, whether it is Prime Minister, a lawmaker or a legislator, he should be brought under its purview and punished," he added.
