Akram blames PCB for 'fighter' Waqar's resignation

London, Mon, 22 Aug 2011 ANI

London, Aug 22(ANI): Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram reckons that health cannot be the only reason behind Waqar Younis' decision to quit as the coach of the national team.

Akram also blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the situation and for damaging cricket in the country.

Waqar had called it quits on Saturday citing health grounds for his inability to continue.

"Something is wrong within the PCB. Nobody stays there for long. Either people are sacked or they move out of their own accord. It's damaging to Pakistan cricket. Waqar was doing a great job," the Nation quoted Akram, as saying.

"I know Waqar very well. He is a fighter. He does not give up easily. I am sure there is a big issue, otherwise he would not have thrown in the towel," he added.

Waqar had taken over as coach in March last year, and under his guidance, Pakistan defied the odds to reach the World Cup semi-final.

However, his tenure also coincided with a spot-fixing scandal that led to lengthy bans for three players, while a public spat with former ODI captain Shahid Afridi ended with Afridi's retirement and manager Intikhab Alam blaming both men for problems within the team. (ANI)
