Cape Town, Aug 22(ANI): South African opening batsman Hashim Amla has been named as the country's 'Sports Star of the Year' in a ceremony held in Sun City.
Amla was recognized ahead of four other nominees-golfer Charl Schwartzel, swimming world record holder Cameron van der Burgh, rugby star Cecil Afrika and footballer Noko Matlou, supersport.com reports.
The 28-year-old made 1,848 ODI runs at an average of 63.72 and 1,437 Test runs at an average of 65.31 during the voting period.
He had also registered his career Test best of 253 not out against India in Nagpur in February 2010.
"Hashim has been wonderfully consistent over the course of the period under review with a set of achievements in both Test match and ODI cricket that has seen him ranked the No.1 ODI player in the world and also in the top 10 in Test cricket," Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief executive Gerald Majola said.
"At one stage he was ranked No. 2 in Test cricket. But I think what really counts is his humility and the role model par excellence he has become for present and future generations," he added. (ANI)
