Melbourne, Aug 21 (ANI): Queensland is suffering from an outbreak of malicious student-run gossip sites, which neither teachers nor the parents have been able control.

According to the Sunday Mail, Education Queensland has assigned former detective Rob Priddey to deal with the menace.

Following the investigation so far, the department has received complaints about 100 different 'inappropriate Facebook pages' that directly refer to students from Queensland state schools.

Information and technologies assistant director-general David O'Hagan revealed that 88 of the gossip sites have since been done away with.

However, a number of sites created by Queensland private school students, are yet to be removed.

Many of the Facebook groups have hundreds of members with some exceeding the 1000-member mark.

Professor Ralph, who this week will address parents at one of the schools affected, insisted that parents were struggling to combat the behaviour.

"Parents feel like there's nothing they can do and there's an element of helplessness," the Herald Sun quoted him as saying.

The sites encourage students to spread rumours, boast about their sexual conquests, accuse each other of drug use and incite violence against classmates. (ANI)
