Melbourne, Aug 21(ANI): Former Australian batsman Dean Jones reckons that Cricket Australia (CA)'s new five-man selection panel has to take ownership of a 'new culture' before the national team can start the long climb back to the top.
The five-man selection panel is part of the recommendations made in the much-awaited Argus Review.
"It's time to change and the new word is culture. Culture starts with the captain, and I believe the captain should be the most important person at Cricket Australia, followed by the chairman of selectors, the chief executive, the coach and chairman of the board," Jones wrote in an article for the Age.
"It can't be superficial; it has to come from within, and this group has to take ownership of a new culture before Australia can start the long climb back to the top. That means no more soft performances, no more individuals putting themselves above the team, and no more medical staff running the show. This show is run by Michael Clarke," he added.
He further said that he is really impressed with the changes Clarke has made since he was made captain.
"He has got himself fitter and he's changed some of his sponsorship arrangements so he can concentrate on the cricket. He's only worried about making this team No.1. I also like what I see of him as an on-field leader; the early signs in Sri Lanka are that he knows how to get the most out of his bowlers and that he will be an instinctive, aggressive captain," Jones wrote.
Jones further said that the second most important person in Australian cricket should be the chairman of selectors.
"The obvious candidates are Trevor Hohns and Rod Marsh, but an option from left field could be someone like New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee," he said. (ANI)
