CBI not free of political control, says Bedi (Update on Bedi)

New Delhi , Sun, 21 Aug 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Aug 21 (ANI): Former IPS officer and civil society activist Kiran Bedi on Sunday said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is not able to function independently due to political interference.

Addressing the gathering at the Ramlila Maidan here, Bedi said: "We had only one agency (CBI) and that has just become a government agency. It is not independent and because their appointment, resources, promotions, directions, their lawyers and budget are not in their hands. Due to this, the CBI is not independent anymore. It is not free of political control."

Bedi said the Lokpal will not reach to the common man if the government keeps the CBI under its power and controls it.

"If the government keeps CBI under its power and controls it then the Lokpal (Ombudsman) would not be able to reach the common man. Lokpal would not reach you. The condition of CBI will remain as it is," she added.

Bedi further charged the government of not bringing the Lokpal Bill drafted by the civil society activists to the fore.

"I don't see why the government cannot understand that such a great man and a pure soul like Anna Hazare has not eaten for the last six days and they are not listening to his voice and they are not seeing that the voice is not selfish," said Bedi.

"There is only one demand he has been asking on behalf of the entire country that this dirty government bill would not work and that they should withdraw it and bring the Jan Lokpal Bill to the fore," she added.

Meanwhile, former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice N. Santosh Hegde, who arrived in New Delhi today, said that he would decide on the future course of action only after meeting the civil society representatives.

"I have come here to meet the team. I will meet them at the Ramlila Maidan. We will decide upon the future course of action after the meeting," he told mediapersons. (ANI)
