Nivea apologizes for racist 're-civilize yourself' ad campaign

New York, Sun, 21 Aug 2011 ANI

New York, Aug 21 (ANI): Beauty and skin care company Nivea has apologized for its allegedly racist ad campaign following public outrage on the Twitter.

The ad shows a short-haired black man hurling the decapitated head of another black man with an Afro hair style and a beard (supposedly his former self) with the slogan 'Look Like You Give A Damn ... Re-Civilize Yourself'.

After several tweets that demanded an apology for the racist and inappropriate message, the company took to Facebook to reveal that they never had the intention to offend anyone.

"Thank you for caring enough to give us your feedback about the recent 'Re-civilized' NIVEA FOR MEN ad. This ad was inappropriate and offensive," the New York Daily News quoted the company as saying.

"It was never out intention to offend anyone, and for this we are deeply sorry. This ad will never be used again. Diversity and equal opportunity are crucial values of our company," it added.

However, according to Forbes, the ad's supposed model B.J. Williams revealed in an online post that he wasn't offended by the campaign.

"Can't believe I'm asking this, but had the man been white throwing a white mask would the media response be the same? Answer that honestly," he wrote. (ANI)
