Geelani warns govt. to release political prisoners before Eid

Srinagar, Sat, 20 Aug 2011 ANI

Srinagar, Aug.20 (ANI): The chairman of the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has asked the government to release the valley's political prisoners before Eid or face consequences.

Addressing media here on Friday, Geelani demanded that political prisoners should be allowed to offer Friday prayers.

"If the political prisoners, who have been lodged in jails here or Jammu are not released before Eid. If we are denied permission to go to our people before and offer prayers on the Alvida Juma Namaz (last Friday of Ramadan) and Eid ul Fitr, then we declare that after Eid we will launch a massive protest," said Geelani.

Comparing the valley"s situation to the times of dictators like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, he further said: "We can say that if we are not getting justice from the courts here, they are not providing us with justice. Hence this is a police state and Marshall Law is being followed. We have police rule here and the system is worse which can be compared to the times of communism and dictatorship like Hitler (Adolf Hitler), Mussolini (Benito Mussolini). The way people and their sentiments were being crushed there on the force of guns and power, exactly similar situation has been created here."

Kashmir has been at the core of the acrimonious relationship between India and Pakistan over the past six decades with the nuclear-armed neighbours having fought two of their three wars since 1947 over the disputed territory, which is claimed by both in full but ruled in parts.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in Indian Kashmir since an armed revolt against New Delhi"s rule erupted in 1989.

Speaking about Anna Hazare's anti-graft crusade, Geelani said his efforts would go futile.

"The treatment that is being used to cure the disease of corruption is not going to generate any results, neither today, nor in the future. The efforts of Mr. Anna Hazare will go waste, until you don"t change the conscience of every man or make him realize that you are accountable before the almighty, until then, nothing can cure this disease," said Geelani.
