Kolkata, Aug 14 (ANI): Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has urged the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to allow parliamentto conduct business during the ongoing monsoon session.
Interacting with media here on Saturday, Mukherjee said: "I asked them let Parliament function and let Parliament pass the bills, two weeks have passed and not much progress has been made, so I requested them it is necessary that all of us should work and get the legislation start."
Proceedings in both houses of parliament have been disrupted following an uproar by BJP lawmakers and parliamentarians over the recent findings in the apex auditing body CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General of India)'s report on the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The 19th Commonwealth Games has been marred by various charges of corruption, dubious contracts and poor workmanship.
The six billion dollar event was billed as India's answer to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but descended into rows over leaking stadiums, filthy athletes' rooms and corruption scandals.
The official estimate had put the cost of the games to three billiondollars. However, unofficial sources say that over 15 billion dollars was spent in staging the mega event that was held in New Delhi last year.
Commenting on the current state of affairs in the country, Mukherjee said: "The Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister, they have stated that it (GDP growth) would be around 8.2 percent, but it is too early to make any projection right now because even the first quarter figure has not come."
Mukherjee also said that the slide in share markets is a worldwide phenomena and a result of the fluctuations in the U.S. economy. (ANI)
