Sydney, August 10(ANI): Pakistan-born Australian batsman Usman Khawaja, who was initially denied permission to travel to India, has now been granted an Indian visa.
The latest development means that Khawaja can play in next month's Champions League Twenty20 tournament if selected in the New South Wales (NSW) squad, The Age reports.
Earlier this week, Khawaja- the first Muslim and first Pakistan-born player to play Test cricket for Australia- had claimed that India had been holding up his visa to play in the tournament because of his country of birth.hawaja, who is on the 20-man list for the New South Wales Twenty20 side, of which 15 will ultimately be sent, had vented his anger at the decision using his Twitter account.
"Indian Visa department need to sort their issues out. Refusing to let me travel to India as an Australian, because I wasn't born here. Wow," he wrote.
However, on Wednesday morning, Khawaja - the first Muslim to play for Australia - was given the green light to travel to India.
"We are delighted that this has been settled and we thank the Indian Consul-General, Mr Amit Dasgupta, for his prompt attention in resolving the matter," Cricket NSW Chairman Dr Harry Harinath was quoted as saying.
The NSW squad for the Champions League will be announced later this week. (ANI)
