Paul McCartney's ex-wife accuses Mirror reporter of hacking her phone

London, Thu, 04 Aug 2011 ANI

London, August 4 (ANI): Heather Mills has accused a senior Mirror journalist of hacking into her voicemail in order to access a message that was sent by her former husband Sir Paul McCartney.

Mills told the BBC's 'Newsnight' that the journalist had rung her up in 2001 and quoted the exact words that the former Beatle had left.

She told the show that she threatened the journalist of legal action over the hacking saying if he went on to do anything with the story, she would go to the police.

The anonymous journalist, who 'Newsnight' revealed was not Piers Morgan, the then-editor of the Daily Mirror, reportedly replied that despite knowing the content of the message he wouldn't make it public.

"OK, OK, yeah we did hear it on your voice messages, I won't run it" the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

Though Morgan is apparently cleared of the suspicion, one of his own accounts in a 2006 article for the Daily Mail, which read about an incident involving McCartney and Mills, certainly hints at his role behind the interception.

"At one stage I was played a tape of a message Paul had left for Heather on her mobile phone. It was heartbreaking. The couple had clearly had a tiff," he wrote in his article. (ANI)
