CWG scam will be thoroughly investigated: Ajay Maken

New Delhi, Thu, 04 Aug 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Aug 4 (ANI): Reacting to reports of major irregularities in the Commonwealth Games, Sports Minister Ajay Maken has said the accused would be thoroughly investigated.

"See, who all the culprits are, investigation will be conducted against them. Currently 11 CBI cases are registered against 45 officials, many senior officials are in jail, so no culprit can be released without proper investigation," said Maken.

Delhi Chief Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday refused to comment on the recently leaked Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India's report, which implicated her in Commonwealth Games scams.

According to media reports, the CAG had criticised Sheila Dikshit's government for serious irregularities in the bidding process of procurement of different Games-related goods and pointed out several instances of wasteful expenditure.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit said that once the CAG report comes out, further actions will be taken against culprits.

"Wherever there is a CAG report, it asks certain questions, then the government replies to that, it will come to the PAC (Public Accounts Committee) in Parliament, if they put it in Parliament then Delhi government and the departments concerned would give their replies and everybody has said. And if it is required and found guilty, they shall be punished. So let them come to court, we will have to see the report and see what it is," said Dikshit.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had appointed a high-level Shunglu committee on October 25, 2010 to investigate and report all irregularities in the execution of various projects by several government agencies during the 2010-sporting extravaganza.

The panel headed by V. K. Shunglu had on January 31 submitted its first report on the alleged irregularities, while broadcasting rights were awarded during the sporting extravaganza.

In his report, Shunglu had recommended that strict action must be taken against suspended Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharti, B S Lalli and former Director General (Doordarshan) Aruna Sharma under relevant Sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Corruption Act for their alleged act of omission and commission.

In the second and third report submitted on the games village and the city's infrastructure, Sheila Dikshit, among several others, were indicted for the delay and loss caused in the implementation of the projects related to the 2010 Games. (ANI)
