New Delhi, Aug.1 (ANI): Given the recent political developments in Karnataka and the strong-arm tactics of former chief minister B.S.Yeddyurappa, the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly considering a series of alternative options to neutralise Yeddyurappa.
According to the website politicsparty.com, one of the options under consideration is that of the BJP taking the support of the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD-S), which is headed by former prime minister H.D. Devegowda to form a new coalition government in Karnataka.
According to the website, the BJP will have the chief minister's post, while the JD-S will have the deputy chief minister's post.
Sources have told the web site that the BJP is working to install Jagdish Shettar, a Lingayat coastal Brahmin leader, as Karnataka's next chief minister, and has offered the post of deputy chief minister to Devegowda's son H.D. Revanna, a Vokkaliga.
Sources further revealed to the web site that senior BJP leader L.K.Advani has expressed his annoyance over Yeddyurappa's political posturing in meetings of the BJP parliamentary party and at other meetings, and added that he could be the person spearheading this new arrangement between the BJP and the JD (S) with the help of Independents.
Currently, the BJP has 121 lawmakers in Karnataka. The JD (S) has 25 and the Independents have six. If they come together, they will have a total of 151 lawmakers. To form a government in Karnataka, a majority of 113 MLAs is required. Yeddyurappa reportedly has the support of 70 MLAs. So, an attempt could be made to reduce his political support to less than 38 MLAs.
The Advani camp is also reportedly keen on installing Anant Kumar as the president of the Karnataka unit of the BJP.
Central observers-Arun Jaitely and Rajnath Singh, both said to be Advani loyalists, would convene a meeting of state BJP lawmakers on August 3, to sort out the leadership issue in the state. (ANI)
