Mumbai, July 31 (ANI): Mill workers met Maharashtra Chief Minister Chief Prithviraj Chavan here on Saturday to resolve the housing allotment issue.
Several of the city's textiles mills located in prime location are in the process of being converted into mega malls and amusement parks.
Veteran trade unionist Datta Samant led a massive strike in 1982 for over a year for better wages and working conditions for the employees of Mumbai's textile mills.
While briefing mediapersons about Saturday's meeting, Datta Ichwalkar, the leader of mill workers, said that the chief minister has accepted all their demands.
"As per our demand, the CM has accepted four criteria, firstly to provide houses to the mill workers, who went on strike on January 1, 1982, which was accepted by the state chief, secondly to provide house to the scion of the workers, thirdly to give houses to those who already have house in Mumbai and also to provide houses to those who are staying outside Mumbai but working in the city," said Ichwalkar.
"I think the basic demand of providing house to the mill workers has been accepted by him," he added.
According to media reports, Chavan has made it clear that providing free houses to all the workers of textile mills in Mumbai is not possible so they would provide free house to the families of those workers, who have sacrificed their lives in the struggle of 1982 strike.
Meanwhile, the panel members from nine organisations supporting the mill workers, who met with Chavan clarified that the decision of Mumbai city shutdown called on Monday (August 1) is not the decision of mill workers, but the radical Hindu Shiv Sena party.
"We are satisfied with whatever the chief minister has said in today's meeting and as far as the issue of Bandh (shutdown) is concerned, the decision is completely on Shiv Sena, as the party has came forward in our support," said Jayshree Khadilkar Pandey, social worker.
"So, we must leave this decision to Shiv Sena only, it does not relate to us," he added. (ANI)
