Pahalgam, July 30 (ANI): At least eight people were killed and over a dozen others got injured when a bus fell into a stream in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag District on Saturday.
The bus fell into the Lidder stream situated in Laganbal village, as it was about to approach the Pahalgam hill station.
Kifayat Hussain Rizvi, Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag District, who visited the accident site, said that the main reason behind the accident was the deplorable condition of the road.
"There has been an accident and we are all feeling very bad for that. There are three reasons behind the accident. Firstly, this road stretch of four to five kilometres is in very bad condition. This was supposed to be repaired by the funding of ADB but that could not be completed because of the objection by wildlife authority," he said.
Rizvi further assured that an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the exact reason behind the accident.
"Well, I had seen some busses, they were quite full. There are many accidents due to overloading in the busses. Third reason, which I feel is that there is no transport facility on the road. I promise in front of you that from today onwards I will work for the betterment of the facility on the road," he said.
Apart from the policemen, locals in large numbers participated in the rescue operations as well.
The traffic on the Islamabad-Pahalgam road was also blocked so that the injured could be admitted to the nearby hospitals at the earliest.(ANI)
