Kolkata, July 30 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has lauded the contribution of West Bengal in the growth of social, political and educational sectors of the country.
Addressing mediapersons here on Friday, Mukherjee said: "In the last two centuries, the contribution of West Bengal in various fields in social, political, educational has been huge and also in inculcating various movements. This region has made very valuable contribution and sometimes it is forgotten that in the field of enterprises, business and also building up entrepreneurship, eastern India has played a very significant role."
He also asserted that it was not possible to spoon-feed a region only by centre and state sponsorships.
"After the second World War and subsequent to the partition of the country, these regions suffered and one of the most significant adverse impacts was that a large part of this region lost its old connectivity to South-East Asia. Our contact with Myanmar through this route and through Myanmar to other neighbours were snapped because of the partition of Bengal," he said.
According to Mukherjee, a region would have to emphasise on its workforce, entrepreneurship and managerial inputs, in order to stride on the path of growth and development.
He concluded by saying that he would extend a helping hand to West Bengal, to help overcome the financial difficulties the state is facing. (ANI)
