Manipur pugilist Kom determined to make the country proud at London Olympic Games

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): Five-time world champion in women's boxing, Mary Kom, has said she is determined to make the country proud at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

 

Kom, who unveiled the a clock at the British High Commissioner's residence here on Wednesday along with ace shooter Abhinav Bindra, said she has been practicing hard for the sporting event.

 

"This is the first time that women boxing is being included in the 2012 London Olympic in the U.K. So I am expecting of course, I am doing a lot of hard work and I will do my best for my country," she said.

 

Kom who hails from Manipur has won the World Boxing Championship five times. The pugilist, who is a mother of two, is a strong Olympic Games contender for India.

 

Meanwhile, an enthusiastic Bindra said that he is looking forward to the event.

 

"I am really looking forward to compete at the Olympics in London, given the fact that London is such a multicultural city I do believe that the Olympics in London are going to be very special because I think the spirit and the energy of the city is going to be fantastic. So I am really looking forward to the games," he said.

 

Bindra won the gold medal in the 10 metre Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He became the first Indian national to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics.

 

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad, are scheduled to take place in London, United Kingdom, from July 27 to August 12, 2012.

 

London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. (ANI)
