Keonjhar, July 28 (ANI): The number of women Maoist surrenders have been on the rise in Orissa, as they complain of being victimised and sexually exploited at the hands of the Maoist leaders.
Surrendered women Maoist cadre in Orissa's Keonjhar District revealed that she suffered sexual exploitation at the hands of Maoist leaders.
Jayanti, a surrendered woman Maoist said on Wednesday that the ultras used to take advantage of the poor people and lured them by saying that they will work for the nation and the underprivileged people.
"I have not seen my own mother. My father got married again and my stepmother was very cruel with me, she used to torture me. I have studied till class 9. She sent me for grazing the cow and made me do lot of household work. She did not like me and used to beat me," said Jayanti.
"Taking advantage of my situation in the house, Sunil, Bobby and Bazi came to our village and lured us by saying that they will fight for the nation and the poor. They took us along with them. We went with them and joined the Maoist group in 2008," she added.
Jayanti, who fled from a Maoist camp, said the ultras take advantage of women cadres and exploit them sexually at the rebel camps.
"I have been physically exploited and it was very difficult to stay in the forests, which I did not like to do. Actually, I did not know that I have to do such work otherwise I would not have joined their party," she said.
Jayanti further said she was sent to Andhra Pradesh for some special work and there also the Maoist leaders exploited her.
She said the situation in Andhra Pradesh is same, and added that the women cadres are exploited by their male counterparts.
Talking about the revelations, Ashish Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, Keonjhar, said there are reports of women being exploited by Maoists leaders.
"A female Maoist has surrendered, who was working for the Maoists for the last three years. She was involved in various crimes. She tried to leave the party and run away from the camp, but she was continuously exploited and she has alleged that they exploited her sexually. In the name of some special work she was sent to Andhra Pradesh and she was exploited there as well," said Singh.
"Her sister tried a lot to get her rescued and she went to the camp herself, so the Maoists kept her sister with them and refused to leave her. But with the efforts of her sister, family and the intelligence agencies, she got a chance to surrender and she has surrendered under the rehabilitation policies of the government," he added.
The surrendered ultras receive the benefits of the welfare schemes provided by the state government, meant for their families. (ANI)
