New Delhi, July 27 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar on Wednesday said that they have the responsibility to mend bilateral ties to reduce tension in the strife-ridden region, while acknowledging a change in the mindset of the people of both nations.
Krishna after meeting Khar here today said relations with Pakistan were on the right track.
"Our relations are on the right track. We have some distance to travel, but with an open mind and a constructive approach, which has been demonstrated in this round of the dialogue, I am sure we can reach our desired destination of having a friendly and cooperative relationship between our two countries," he told mediapersons here.
The two foreign ministers also agreed on some confidence-building measures, such as relaxing trade and travel restrictions.
"We have agreed that increasing trade and economic cooperation between the two countries would be mutually beneficial," Krishna said.
Meanwhile, thirty four-year-old Khar, who is Pakistan's first woman foreign minister, said the meeting heralded a new era in the bilateral ties between the two countries.
"This is indeed a new era in bilateral cooperation between the two countries and it is our desire and I believe, after having spoken to you Mr. Foreign Minister, that it is the desire and commitment of both the governments to make it an uninterrupted and uninterruptible process," she said.
Khar further said it was in the national interests of both the nations to improve relations.
"There has been a mindset change in the people of the two countries that we must acknowledge. Let me convey this change of mindset from the people of Pakistan, from the political parties of Pakistan. It is in our two countries' national interests to have cooperative, bilateral, friendly relationship between the two countries," she said. (ANI)
