Sandle delighted to take over as Black Caps manager

Wellington (New Zealand), July 25 (ANI): New Zealand team manager Mike Sandle has vowed that he will not be making headlines for the wrong reasons.

The 49-year-old, who managed the Blues in this year's Super Rugby competition, was named on Saturday as Dave Currie's successor. He will start work on September 5, with his first assignment the following month's tour of Zimbabwe, stuff.co.nz reports.

Currie raised eyebrows during his tenure with a few classic cricketing no-no's; walking in front of the sightscreen and delaying play, being hit by a ball when turning his back on net practice and, most famously, ticking off batsman Jesse Ryder in the dressing room soon after his dismissal when he'd whacked a chair in anger.

"I'm a cricket lover, even though I haven't played to a great level. I understand the do's and don'ts," Sandle was quoted, as saying.

"I know when you watch it's always good to watch from behind the bowler's arm. There's a time to talk to players and a time not to," he added. Taranaki native, who played social cricket for the Stratford club, Sandle's main sporting love is rugby.

After 24 years with the New Zealand police, including stints with the organised crime unit, armed offenders squad and as a dog handler, he managed Taranaki, and the New Zealand under-19 and divisional teams.

He, wife Michelle and daughters Rebecca, 18, and Renee, 13, shifted to Auckland and he managed the Blues during their semi-final run this year.

But when he saw New Zealand Cricket's advertisement for the manager's role, he jumped at the chance.

"Jobs with national teams don't come around very often, so when they do, if you're in a position it's a good time to have a crack at it," Sandle said, adding that he knew none of the players, aside from Jacob Oram. (ANI)
