Ahmedabad, July 25 (ANI): Acclaimed dancer and lawmaker Mallika Sarabhai has slammed the Gujarat government for not being able to protect the Right to Information (RTI) activists in the state.
Referring to some of the latest attacks on RTI activists, Sarabhai said the state government failed to cooperate on different occasions.
"The space for honest citizens to ask anything, any information in Gujarat is shrinking by the day. Not only have RTI activists been consistently attacked, raped, hit on the head and killed but there has been no Lokayukta, there are thousands of applications that are pending. The government is saying no to simple RTI applications like we have asked every MLA and minister to declare their assets and we are being told this is beyond our RTI demands and they will not give the information," said Sarabhai.
She added that activists in the state are under the scanner and being targeted.
"We are being hounded. Where is the protection, if there was protection then RTI activists would not be beaten up? We have RTI activists here who were beaten up yesterday, day before yesterday, five weeks ago, two weeks ago, months ago, years ago, where is this protection. Not only is there no protection but the people who have beat them up are ex-ministers, they are MLAs who are out, roaming around, completely free on bail. Where is this protection?" said Sarabhai.
The recent attacks on activists had generated heavy criticism against the state administration over its ability to curb the incidents. (ANI)
