New Delhi, July 22 (ANI): Melanne Verveer, US Ambassador-at-large for Global Women's issues, currently on a tour of India, visited a Municipal Corporation Primary School here today
During her stay in the school, she read out stories and narrated personal experiences to the young children.
She also interacted with girls and stressed on the need to address gender disparities and educating girls to build a prosperous country.
"We know when there is greater effort to address gender disparities, those countries are more prosperous for all of the people. So it is a wide ranging agenda, but women should be participating at every level and for that to happen, girls need to be educated," said Verveer.
She also said that participation of women at the grassroots is integral to the development of the society in a country like India.
"I have met many women here (India) at the grassroots level and at the Panchayats (village councils), who are doing extraordinary work at that community village level to women of higher levels of governance. Women's political participation is important, not because they are better than men or men are better than women, but that together on tapping the talents and experiences of women, they can contribute more significantly to policy decisions that will benefit all the people of the country," added Verveer.
She also stressed on the need to eliminate crime against women like rape, honour killings and also cases of domestic violence.
Verveer earlier visited in Chaksu in Rajasthan to meet the women members of the village council whom she described as 'silent revolutionaries in a democracy'. (ANI)
