Chaksu, July 22 (ANI): Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues, who visited in Chaksu of Rajasthan, has said that India's village councils are silent revolutions in a democracy.
Verveer interacted with a large group of women of the municipal administration who told the U.S. envoy the problems they faced in their respective villages.
"I knew about the strong panchayat (village council) presence here among the women. It's a success story that is increasingly being heard around the world and I wanted to come and see for myself. Because I do believe this is one of the great revolutions, maybe a silent one, in the democracy here. The empowerment of women at the local governance level to make a difference for their communities," said Verveer.
She said the village council in the state was a model for the world.
Verveer further said the U.S. is committed in working with India to support programmes like the training for women in the village councils.
Women of the village councils said they were happy to meet her and appreciated her effort to meet and listen to their day-to-day problems.
"This lady (Verveer) who has come from America is a high official and she met the women of our village councils. She heard our problems and also patiently listened to how we dealt with the problems we face in our everyday lives. We are very happy to meet her. We are extremely overwhelmed by her visit, as she holds a high profile and yet came to meet us. And we hope to get more such opportunities to meet people like her," said Murli Meena, village council representative. (ANI)
