New Delhi, July 21 (ANI): Jolted by the recent expose of doping scandal among Indian athletes, Sports Minister Ajay Maken has said that National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala would be separated from Sports Authority of India (SAI).
Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Maken said: " NIS would be separated from SAI and would be an autonomous body so as to train coaches and good trainers."
"All of us have decided that NIS Patiala would be separated from the Sports Authority of India and made an independent and autonomous body. Its main function would be to train the coaches and getting good trainers to India," he added.
He further stressed that the primary role envisaged for NIS would be that of producing world class and qualified coaches for various sporting disciplines rather than the currently prevalent, dominant role of holding training camps for athletes.
Maken also said that the board has decided to concentrate more on producing better coaches and trainers and the case will be present before the parliament.
"We have decided to concentrate more on producing better coaches and NIS Patiala will have to fulfil this role in the future. We would present NIS Patiala as in institute of national importance before the society and through a bill in the winter or budget session of the Parliament. We will establish it as an institute of national importance and through this body make sure that better coaches are produced," said Maken.
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) swooped down at the National Institute of Sports located in Patiala on July 9.
A team of four doctors visited the NIS complex, sports halls and hostels of sportspersons to initiate the process of taking their blood samples for verification.
The action comes soon after certain athletes tested positive for taking banned performance boosting, anabolic substances in a stinging expose. (ANI)
