Blame mobiles, make-up and music for getting distracted behind the wheel

London, Tue, 19 Jul 2011 ANI

London, July 19 (ANI): Previous studies have shown that distracted drivers are a leading cause of motor vehicle accidents around the world. Now, a new UK survey has listed the common causes behind drivers losing their concentration - music, mobile phones, cosmetics, snacks and drinks.

The researchers found that eight in 10 motorists put lives at risk by getting distracted behind the wheel.

According to the survey for price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, an alarming 82 percent of drivers confessed to having been badly distracted at some stage.

Music is the single biggest cause and 61 percent admit that they get distracted while changing CDs, music on their iPod or stations on the radio.

Half say snacks and drinks are to blame and 23 percent admit making or taking calls on a hand-held mobile phone while driving.

Among the under-35 age group, 36 percent confessed to sending texts at the wheel - and two per cent said they looked at Facebook while driving.

Five percent admitted applying perfume or make-up in the mirror and 15 percent said they did not wear a seatbelt.

"Taking your eyes off the road, even for a second, could lead to severe or even fatal consequences," the Daily Express quoted moneysupermarket.com car insurance expert Peter Harrison as saying.

"Careless drivers are a menace on the roads and are a danger to both themselves and others. It really isn't worth taking the risk," he added. (ANI)
