Salman Butt to miss corruption-linked hearing in London

Karachi, Tue, 19 Jul 2011 ANI

Karachi, July 19(ANI): Disgraced Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt has said he will not appear before a London court today for a preliminary hearing into a criminal case registered against him by the Crown Prosecution Services (CPS) for corruption and cheating.

The case also involves Butt's teammates Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, who are in London for the hearing at the Southwark court.

"I had applied for a visa on time to the British embassy, but since I didn't get the passport back on time I can't go to London," the Daily Times quoted Butt, as saying.

"I wanted to appear myself, but because of the visa problems now my lawyer, Yasin Patel will represent me in the hearing," he added.

Butt further said that if required and if his lawyer advised him, he would be available for a video conference.

The British prosecutors have "authorized charges of conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, and also conspiracy to cheat" against Butt, Asif and Amir as well as alleged bookmaker Mazhar Majeed.

Butt, Asif and Amir are already serving a five-year ban from the International Cricket Council (ICC) anti-corruption tribunal that found them guilty of spot fixing during a hearing in Doha. (ANI)
